Rhythm piranhas ..like true Obama's bababaam..As...
Have been listening to heaps of new music lately, so I will list some here.
My favourite so far has to be the new Roots album How I got over. It’s got some real melodic hooks into it, as well as the usual awesome Black Thought flows (plus numerous other MC’s). Killer tracks are the opener Walk Alone and the club banger Right On which is all over bNet radio in NZ..
Other albums of...

Splore 2010
Splore is nestled in the beaches and banks of Tapapanka Regional Park, and every two years is home to 6,000 odd party goers who come prepared for a weekend of music, arts and partying. It is also no coincidence that Splore is scheduled for the peak of the New Zealand summer, where swimming, dancing, eating, laughing and drinking (and in many cases a combination of them all) are enjoyed under the...

Shapeshifter - that stinking ex feeling
It’s that similar hollow feeling when you split from a partner that you learn that one of the instrumental musicians in one of your favourite bands has left, and suddenly they are gone out of your life. Forever.
Shapeshifter almost pulled one on us on their recent summer tour, replacing one of their original members, drummer Redford Grenell, and the circumstances surrounding how he left the...
If you are playing music to get signed, please do me, yourself, and the whole...
– Danny Carey, drummer for Tool (via the Q&A section of DannyCarey.org)
Tool is one of the smartest bands, made of some of the smartest individuals, I’ve ever heard.

Pearl Jam Live in Auckland
Friday 27th November Pearl Jam finally hit New Zealand for the first time in 11 years. With Liam Finn and Ben Harper and the Relentless7 also on the bill, this was always going to be a night to remember…and it was.
I was personally fresh off an overseas flight with no sleep, so an afternoon of catching up with good friends over some drinks playing various Pearl Jam albums nd all hoping for...

VIP pearl jam NZ
10 mates and I have got VIP tickets to pearl jam in November..So what you might say if you live in the states or europe? But they have not been to the shakey isles (New Zealand) for something like 11 years. This is going to be a long and measured build up, and my good friend Face has just bought a house walking distance to the gig. Communal day off November 27. Liam Finn (son of Neil from Crowded...

Eru Dangerspiel - Live at the Auckland Town Hall
On Saturday I saw one of the coolest, most original concerts I have ever seen. It was orchestrated by the great Ricki Gooch (ex drummer from Trinity Roots) who under the guise of Eru Dangerspiel pulled together some of New Zealand’s finest musicians to perform arrangements from his album `Great News for the Modern Man’ at Auckland’s Town Hall. This mesmeric 16-piece group was dressed in a mix of...

Beastie Boys join the new wave of selling products...
After my earlier post about Trent Reznor and the new way of doing things, the Beastie Boys are dipping their toes into this new domain, by way of a re-release of their classic album (and my personal favourite Beasties album) Ill Communication.
Much like Reznor’s proposition you can buy products at various levels - mp3’s, CDs, Vinyl, Duluxe Vinyl etc with little add ons - T-shirts,...

New Zealand Music Month?
So June is almost upon us, and that means NZ Music Month is almost complete. Is is just me or has this been a massive fizz this year?
Apart from some local TV and radio running small promos I have not come across any gigs promoting such a cause. I know the month is about promoting the smaller, lesser known musicians, but the official website seems to lack some well known names.
Where is the...

Entering the Fat Freddy's debate
Whilst I thought there ticket prices were a little high, I have always been blown away by their live concerts, and recently at their second Auckland show at the Powerstation was no different. In fact for me it was extra special because two of the elements of the great but now defunct Trinity Roots rythym section were live on stage with Fat Freddys. Rio Hemopo joined the band on bass, adding even...

How To Kill The Music Industry →
thepursuit:
“The fact is that the music industry’s revenues have been artificially inflated for decades because of limited consumer options. The last 15 years of innovation have lifted those limitations, effectively leaving the music industry with an obsolete, defective business model of monopolized production technology, forced album bundling, and almost nonexistent competition in the realm of...

New Zealand takes a giant leap backward. ‘Titiular titles’ Sir and Dame reinstated. I’m appalled. Monarchy is fundamentally evil.

Music Marketing Strategy: Buy the Album, Get to...
Josh Freese from NIN and A Perfect Circle has developed a new way to sell and promote himself as a musician.
Taking a leaf from the likes of Radiohead, Freese is thinking outside the square to make some money from music in a less traditional style. Using his fame, and musical connections freeze is selling his new album to different market segments.
Purchase the CD/DVD, or digital version of the...
