Went to KRS One live in Auckland recently. The gig got moved from the cloud where the World Cup parties were because the cops didn’t like the expected crowd and denied the liquor license. Obviously had no idea what KRS One stands for, with his fear of flying he even travelled by boat to get here. Respect!

I went to potentially the last Big Day Out in New Zealand on friday which is a sad tale. Apparently low ticket sales and the huge production costs of bringing bands over for one gig is too much. Had an awesome day though, and highlights were Foster the People, Soundgarden, and Nero to finish it off. Here is a video of Soundgarden.

Radiohead’s new album ‘King of Limbs’ has been released to mixed reviews. I am on about listen number 15 and I am finally starting to ‘get’ some of the harder more complex songs.

The first single ‘Lotus Flower’ has a more normal (such a thing for Radiohead?) song structure and is a good entrance to get into the album. It’s got some of the same qualities as ‘In Rainbows’ and in particular the song ‘Reckoner’ had with rich layers of complexity that are slowly unravelled with each listen..

Finally check out Thom Yorke’s Chaplin inspired interpretative dance moves, impressive!

TOOL Live in Auckland Big Day Out - The Patient

Newtown Rock Steady Live @ Nelson’s boathouse

Been to a few good gigs lately. In fact there is so much on the horizon it is crazy for little ol’ New Zealand.

Recently I have seen Eru Dangerspiel, Katchafire, The Smashing Pumpkins all in the space of two weeks.

In the next couple of months before xmas there Trinity Roots reuniting, The Gorillaz and Pharoahe Monch and Jean Gray.

Will be trying to post some footage up shortly, but in the meantime is the Smashing Pumpkins at the Auckland Town Hall playing Cherub Rock.

Rhythm piranhas ..like true Obama’s bababaam..As we enter..

Have been listening to heaps of new music lately, so I will list some here.

My favourite so far has to be the new Roots album How I got over. It’s got some real melodic hooks into it, as well as the usual awesome Black Thought flows (plus numerous other MC’s). Killer tracks are the opener Walk Alone and the club banger Right On which is all over bNet radio in NZ..roots

Other albums of late, Salmonella Dub’s new one Freak Controller. Better then their last one, still missing Tiki bad, but slightly improved guest vocals and some real nice instrumentals. Best track is ‘bombastic’ which reminds me of inside the dub plates era. They finally found a horn section again too which is great.

Then there is Damian Marley and Nas, there album has been been a long time coming after previous collaborations such as Road to Zion. You kind of feel Nas is the one who has had to change his style on this and Damien comes across as a little one-dimensional. Still a great listen, and well produced by Stephen Marley. Best tracks are ‘Tribal War’ and opener ‘As we enter.’

Next is Big Boi’s (Outkast) first solo album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The son of Chico Dusty. The album is a bit all over the show like the album title, but does hit a few sweet spots, and he does have good tempos in his rhymes. Heaps of guest MC’s round out the album: Raekwon, Khujo and of course Andre 3000. Stand out track is Tangerine.

Finally a change of tempo, Wolfmother’s album Cosmic Egg. These guys have been around a while, but have a simple but effective sound and are worth a listen on a good stereo. I won’t make a comparison to who the singer sounds like, I am sure you would get my drift if you heard them and know your rock history. Favourite track New Moon Rising. Boom!
